The Effect of Imprinted Genes on Carcass Traits in Australian Angus and Hereford Cattle
نویسندگان
چکیده
Imprinted loci are those where the level of expression of an allele depends upon the allele’s parent of origin. Imprinting is a widespread phenomenon and parent-of-origin effects have been reported for many qualitative and quantitative traits, in particular carcass traits. The effect of parent-of-origin effects on three quantitative traits – eye muscle area and fat depth at the P8 and 12/13 rib sites – measured on Angus and Hereford heifers and bull calves was examined. Parentof-origin effects accounted for 12-45% of the total genetic variation for these traits.

The objective of this study was to characterize breeds representing diverse biological types for postweaning growth and carcass composition traits in terminal crossbred cattle. Postweaning growth and carcass traits were analyzed on 434 steers and 373 heifers obtained by mating F1 cows to Charolais sires. Maternal grandsires represented Hereford, Angus, and MARC III (1⁄4 Hereford, 1⁄4 Angus, 1⁄4...

Conformation scores can account for more than 20% of cattle price variation at Australian livestock sales. However, there are limited available references which define genetic factors relating objective live developmental traits to carcass composition. Weaning and post-weaning weight, height, length, girth, muscle (ratio of stifle to hip width) and fat depth of 1202 progeny from mature Hereford...
متن کاملBreed Differences and Genetic Parameters for Fat Traits of Crossbred Cattle
Sires representing seven diverse breeds were mated to Hereford cows over four years and the progeny slaughtered. Highly marbled Jersey and Wagyu crossbred cattle had softer fat (6% lower melting point) than the other breeds. The Angus crosses marbled like Jersey and Wagyu, but had harder fat similar to the very lean Belgian Blue. Hereford, South Devon and Limousin crosses had harder fat than An...

The objective of this study was to quantify the effect of inbreeding on carcass quality, growth rate, live conformation measures, and calving performance in purebred populations of Charolais, Limousin, Simmental, Hereford, and Angus beef cattle using data from Irish commercial and pedigree herds. Variables analyzed are reflective of commercial farming practices. Inbreeding was included in a lin...
